Standard 7 - Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community.

Focus Area: 7.1 Meet professional ethics and responsibilities.

Graduate Descriptor: Understand and apply the key principles described in codes of ethics and conduct for the teaching profession.

Elaboration: Understanding the key principles in the code of ethics allows teachers to better apply them throughout their practice. Integrity, respect and responsibility are the underpinning core values of the teaching profession. Integrity relates to being honest and trustworthy in our relationships, whilst upholding the honour of the profession. Respect relates to acting courteously and
with compassion, whilst advocating
for our learners, acknowledging
and valuing their diverse backgrounds, abilities and behaviours. It is our responsibility to provide quality teaching and care, whilst upholding the professional standards.

Evidence Description: As evidence of this standard I have included a link to the code of ethics from the South Australian Teachers Registration Board (TRB). It highlights the core values I intend to apply in my profession. I have also attached a copy of my Responding to Abuse and Neglect education and care training certificate, to display that I have been trained to respond appropriately in such situations, and as evidence of acting within the TRB's code of ethics.

Focus Area: 7.2 Comply with legislative, administrative and organisational requirements.

Graduate Descriptor: Understand the relevant legislative, administrative and organisational policies and processes required for teachers according to school stage.

Elaboration: Teachers need to understand and follow policies and processes outlined by Government, States and individual schools. Understanding legislation purpose, such as Responding to abuse and neglect education and care training, is useful for teachers in identifying situations like family neglect, or bullying, and how to cat and report accordingly.

Evidence Description: Entering into the school environment, it essential that I have shown, and provided a copy of me Responding to Abuse and Neglect. This shows that I have been trained to recognise and respond to abuse and neglect situations. This is now a legislative requirements to be a teacher, or even a person who has direct contact with students, such as a bus driver.

Focus Area: 7.3 Engage with the parents/carers.

Graduate Descriptor: Understand strategies for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers.

Elaboration: Teachers need to work effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers to provide the best outcome for the common interest - the student. When communication is respectful, with integrity, and responsibility teachers are abiding by their code of conduct. An understanding of the parent-school relationship highlights many difficulties, and the need to be professional at all times.

Evidence Description: The evidence I have included as proof of this standard is a reading form Managing Learning Environments (MLE) EDUC 5182, by Louise Porter 2007. I have paraphrased points to highlight an understanding of the concepts as a research based plan for engaging parents/carers.

Evidence Supplied: Strategies and for working effectively, sensitively and confidentially with parents/carers, sourced through Managing Learning Environments (MLE) EDUC 5182 reading 18,
Porter, L. (2007). Chapter 13 Collaborating with parents and other experts to resolve school-based behavioural difficulties. Student behaviour: theory and
practice for teachers (3rd ed.). Crows Nest, N.S.W: Allen & Unwin.

Elaboration: Parents often won't want to be involved in schooling, particularly at risk children's parents, with whom you want most collaboration. They sometimes doubt their abilities to influence their child's education path, or are often under socio-economic duress, and have little time. A negotiation about their role in any school based issue may be necessary. "Sustained administrative commitment will be essential for fostering connections with families" (p.297). Regular communication between the school and home can also assist in creating a culture of welcomeness, especially positive event communications over the period of the year.

If a problem does arise which requires collaborating with parents/carers, the problem is never with the child/family, the problem is the problem! At this point is important to engage parent expertise and decide who to involve. By identifying the problem, mapping its influence, setting goals together, explore exceptions to when the problem was different together, plan then implement solutions, and notice and highlight the changes. I this is unsuccessful Porter suggests referral as no one person no everything.

This process is one way teachers can collaborate professionally with parents.

Focus Area: 7.4 Engage with professional teaching networks and broader communities.

Graduate Descriptor: Understand the role of external professionals and community representatives in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice.

Elaboration: To be a life long learner it is important for teachers to engage with external professionals in a continuous expansion of their practice. Associations such as, the Design And Technology Teachers Association (DATTA) provide for teachers support, resources and opportunities to discuss the evolving nature of the profession.

Evidence Description: Becoming a member of a Teachers Association demonstrates a willingness to collaborate with peers in the same area of teaching. Attending regular meeting provides technology teachers with the latest information, and opportunities to discuss and share ideas for Curriculum based learning strategies.
